Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get married if I have been divorced?
Yes, in most circumstances as a benefice, we marry those who have been divorced. Can someone of another faith or no religion get married in your churches? Yes. If you are happy to do so. The service is a Christian service and because it’s also a legal ceremony, we are only authorised to use the words we are given. We are happy to marry you, if you are happy to make your promises using these words. Can children come to the wedding? Yes! Your own children and children of friends and family are welcome. Can I have a special song and or readings? Yes, we encourage you to choose music and readings that are special to you as a couple. As it’s a church wedding, one of the readings needs to come from the Bible, but we can help you choose. Do you have an organist or someone to play music? Yes, however there is a minimum fee of £100, often a bit more. |
How many bridesmaids, page boys, grooms people, ushers, readers, flowers girls can I have?
As many as you like. When do we do the wedding rehearsal? Usually the evening before, but we can arrange it for when you want. All the main participants need to come to the rehearsal. How long is the service? Usually between 35 - 45 minutes. It’s the photos afterwards that take the time! How much does it cost to get married in church? The fees for church weddings are set every year by the Church of England. For 2023 the fee is £559. In addition to this we ask that you make a £40 contribution for a verger to attend and help the guests and clergy. If you are having an organist the minimum fee is £100 and bells, if the church has them is £200. If you are getting married and need the church heated, then there will be an additional contribution towards the heating. Flowers for the church are at your own cost. Fees need to be paid three weeks before the date. |
