This is your invitation to come and be with us....
Bring everything you are under God because…Golden Cap can offer you space; to breathe, to work hard, to try new things, to swim in the sea and the Holy Spirit. This is not a place to retire quietly, but a place to put down roots and flourish in your ministry with us, led by God.
As our only full-time clergy colleague and Rector, we would like help with:
Growing our felt presence through taking part and becoming known through community events and happenings and especially online through social media and you tube. We know the first steps to mission are prayer and building relationships outside our church circles. Help us be better known, so many more people can come to know Jesus.
Developing fresh ways to make Jesus known creatively, through our music and worship life and our discipleship and community programmes to reach the silent majority of our 7,000 resident population, who we almost never encounter - the 30 - 65 years old and families beyond schools. We’ve got ideas and we hope you have too.
Growing, training and caring for a new pastoral team. With 12 churches in 60 sq miles, local pastoral care often suffers. We really need help with developing a lay led team and breaking the myth that you’ve only been visited ‘by the church’ if the vicar drops by. We are acutely aware that often people move into our benefice bringing amazing life experience, talent and wealth but this hides the deprivation that is an undercurrent in our communities caused by loneliness, isolation, poverty and the lack of employment opportunities.
Growing our lay leadership teams in our churches and developing our Service Leaders team. We have good people, but often we’re stretched.

Golden Cap Benefice is an extraordinary place:
What we are excited about:
Our schools work Led by Sarah Godfrey and a brilliant group of volunteers including governors. From pretty much a standing start, 2 years ago this is now thriving. The children at Hawkchurch recorded you a special message – it’s just a shame they can’t be on the interview panel! As an extra treat, see the children at Marshwood who stole the show when we did the Church of England’s national online service last summer.
Our recent and ongoing building works to make real our vision to be open and accessible sacred spaces in the heart of our communities. Kitchens, toilets, audio visual systems and wifi are going in. Upgrades in heating and reordering. It is massive task, a huge demand on already stretched resources and the primary reason we are struggling to pay our parish share. But we all are looking forward to blessing the toilets!
Our growingonline presence social media and communications that enables our dispersed church community to keep in touch, worship together.
Our new things, more lay led home groups and more special services like our Healing Services at St Candida and Soul Soak, an hour of curated contemporary worship music. Plus our new initiative, St Wite’s Way Pilgrimage Experience led by Virginia Luckett with a team of volunteers from across and beyond the benefice. There’s lots of potential, the Spirit of God is on the move. It’s an exciting place to be. But we couldn’t do any of this without our team…
You are joining a team…
You are not alone. We are blessed in many ways, especially with our team.
Golden Cap has a large team of volunteer lay leaders involved in the life of our churches as well as retired clergy, with two Readers, James Ashdown and Jim Pettifer (who retires in September 2024), an Associate Priest Lucy Ashdown, a second year [self-supporting] curate Sarah Keen, and two part time Team Vicars, Virginia Luckett [half stipend] and Sarah Godfrey [house for duty] who is currently Acting Team Rector. Please see our who’s who for more names and faces.

That in September 2023 our informal Benefice ‘Team Council’ became a body corporate - a Partial Joint Council with authorised powers to act on behalf of a particular PCC around financial and building management should they so wish. It’s early days, but it has a lot of potential to enable us to act more collectively as a benefice and streamline our admin so our people can focus on more on mission rather than buildings and money.
We are blessed to have Peter Hunt, as our Team Treasurer.
Administration The wonderful Margaret Trafford is our part time Benefice Administrator [self-employed] who plays an important central role in the co-ordination of our benefice.
Where Will You Live?
Purpose built as a vicarage, there are 4 bedrooms, 2 reception rooms, a large kitchen and utility room. In addition there is a large study that can be accessed from the front porch so work can be kept separate from the home. The house is heated by gas. There is a double garage and the garden is a manageable size. It is behind gates and is mainly to the back of the house.
